Advice and Support in NRW
for intersex people, their parents, and relatives:
Currently, there are only a few offers and spaces for intersex people and their families in North Rhine-Westphalia. To help you find them, here is a list of counseling services and support groups both in NRW and across Germany. This selection includes a few services in NRW that do not address intersex people and their relatives explicitly but are sensitive to their needs. It also includes consultation and information services aimed at journalists and other professionals. The information is sorted by target group, type, and location.

Many of these places offer their services in English. Are you an intersex person or the parent of an intersex child living in North Rhine-Westphalia,and you are not able to attend one of these consultation services due to language barriers? Please, contact us – we may be able to help you by providing an interpreter.

Lila NRW Support Group for Families
This support group for intersex children and their families meets regularly in Cologne. The group’s focus is on intersex children and their families, but it also welcomes intersex adults.

Intergeschlechtliche Menschen Landesverband NRW e.V. (Regional Association – Intersex People, NRW)
Provides comprehensive information in the NRW area for private individuals, institutes, medical facilities and in the area of child and youth welfare. Supports self-help groups in the NRW area and cordially invites all interested parties.

Qualified “experts with first-hand expertise”(that is, intersex people of all ages and relatives of intersex children) will give you their peer advice – even in person, if you wish.

This support group aims to connect people who do not easily fit into a binary sexual model due to their innate physical characteristics and, as such, describe themselves as intersex.

TransInterQueer e.V.
Psychosocial counseling provided by intersex counselors for intersex people and their families. This service is available in English & via email, phone conversation and video call.

Support Group for XY Women
The nationwide support group brings together people who do not easily fit into a binary sexual model due to their innate physical characteristics and, as such, describe themselves as intersex. Many group members have a male XY chromosome set (XY genotype) and a female appearance. These people regularly meet in regional and trans-regional groups throughout German-speaking countries. During the meetings, they share their experiences and a wide range of information.
